FROM THE EMBODIMENT SERIES. This series is a celebration of our inner self. Hara in Japanese, means the vital center of the body as well as the center of gravity. It is located right under the navel. It is the "Sea of QI". In Eastern medicine, we become sick when our Qi is imbalanced. We all have Qi, we all are energy. This energy is creative and destructive towards others and or ourselves especially if not nurtured. I wanted to show my version of this space by having dancers embody it and show its beauty or struggle to survive. Dancers understand the idea of digging into their creative selves and grounding themselves in it to obtain proper balance /grace/ true movement. I had the privilege and joy to work with Ashley Whitson (HARA #3), Julian Watson (HARA #2), Cassandra Martin (HARA #1), Erika Citrin (HARA #4) & Ezra Goh (HARA #5) for this series.
Here with the intense Ezra Goh, professional dancer, who danced the fight of the creative to survive. Hara #5 is about the depressive state of the self when not nurtured. The body struggles to remain up but can't as it is missing energy, joy, "food". Then the self breaks down, sickness settles in. There is a fight and the beginning of an agony. Will the person be able to stand up again in its own self or will it loose the fight? The circumstances of the challenge faced will decide the outcome.
